Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is intended for construction locations, where supplies have to be transported around on unpaved surfaces. The safe and proper use of rough terrain forklifts is vital to be able to ensure the wellbeing of both the operator and other workers at the work site.
Terrain
These trucks are built for rough terrain, but care must still be taken in order to prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and must only be operated on level ground when lifting.
Speed
Even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules governing forklift speed limitations, forklift operators should drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on uneven or rough terrain needs even more caution. Steering, particularly, can be risky at higher speeds.
Incline
Keep the load on the uphill side of the machine if operating on an incline. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Never attempt to raise a load if operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the equipment to tip over.
Safety Devices
Operators of forklifts should always put on seat belts like any driver. Check that the overhead guard is firmly in position. Depending upon the working environment, hearing and eye protection may need to be worn. Make sure that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift can be affected by climate. Speed, turning and load handling may need to be adjusted to ensure safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
