Prior to purchasing a new or used forklift, there are several factors that you must take into account. Consider the following things before choosing.
Step 1: What exactly are your requirements?
Consider the kinds of loads you would be carrying and how heavy they typically are. Think about the maximum lifting height that you would require. Find out whether you would be using the forklift indoors or outdoors, or both. Measure the width of your narrowest aisles and calculate how much maneuvering space there is. What would be the duration of use per day in terms of hours?
Step 2: Is a used forklift your best alternative?
If you will be utilizing the forklift four hours per day or less, you can possibly get away with buying used.
Step 3: Fuel options
As electric forklifts are relatively quiet and produce no exhaust emissions, they are recommended for indoor applications. They have big batteries which could last eight hours before needing to be recharged. The cost of buying electric forklifts is higher, but the operating costs are lower. On the plus side, they do not require fuel storage space. They also tend to last longer since they have fewer moving components. However, the time it takes to recharge the battery has to be factored in. This could take up to 16 hours, including recharging and cooling. And battery recharging stations may be required.
Step 4: Tire choice
Forklifts have cushion tires. There are some options when it comes to tires. Some are fabricated of solid rubber, some are inflated, and some combine qualities of both - solid pneumatic tires. For indoor application, cushion tires are recommended. For outdoor applications, pneumatic tires are best. Solid pneumatic tires are less likely to be punctured by rough terrain or sharp things so they are the best choice for risky conditions.
Step 5: Consider additional alternatives
When buying a used or new forklift truck, think about additional alternatives. Look at the different attachments which you might require to customize your forklift. Check out the forklift's ergonomics and safety features
Step 6: Evaluate your choices
It is a great idea to rent various models and brands and see what suits your needs the best. A good dealer would agree to help you with this. This would guarantee that the model you finally purchase is the correct one for all your needs. Be sure to consult with your dealer.
